North Yorkshire is the largest county in England and we cover a corner of it: Skipton and Settle on the A65 at the edge of the Dales, and Harrogate and Knaresborough on the A59 and A61. That split matters. Skipton is a market town and a canal town, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park starting just beyond it, and Settle is the start of the Settle to Carlisle railway, so both fill with walkers, cyclists and coach parties who leave cars in the long-stay car parks and come back to a key that is missing or will not work. Harrogate is a conference and spa town with a very different mix of traffic.

Harrogate's calendar drives the parking. The Convention Centre, the Great Yorkshire Show in July, the Stray and the Valley Gardens bring people in from everywhere, and the town's multi-storeys and on-street pay and display spaces are where keys go missing and fobs give up. Knaresborough is smaller and steeper, with the riverside car parks under the viaduct, the Wednesday market and Mother Shipton's Cave pulling in visitors through the summer. Both are on the Harrogate rail line, and station car parks are the other place a car waits all day for an owner who has just found the key is not in the bag.

Postcodes give the split away: Skipton and Settle are BD23 and BD24, while Harrogate is HG1 to HG3 and Knaresborough is HG5. The service is identical either side.
