Our Derbyshire towns are all in the High Peak, and the geography decides everything. Glossop and Hadfield sit at the foot of the Snake Pass and the Woodhead road. New Mills and Whaley Bridge are stacked up the Goyt valley, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton are higher still, and Bakewell is down in the limestone country by the Wye. Steep streets, stone terraces with no off-road parking and weather that closes the passes in winter all shape how we work: the van carries everything needed to cut and program a key at the kerb, so a car does not have to be recovered off a hill to get a key made.

This is Peak District visitor territory, which changes the pattern of the work. Buxton's Pavilion Gardens, the Monday market at Bakewell, Chatsworth on the road out of Bakewell and the trail car parks around Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith all bring in people whose only spare is at home. A key dropped on Kinder Scout or in the Wye is not coming back, so the job is an all-keys-lost replacement done at the car park, with photo ID and proof of ownership checked before we start. Two commuter rail lines serve the area, one ending at Glossop via Hadfield and the other running through New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith to Buxton, and the station car parks hold cars all day.

Postcodes are SK across the High Peak: SK13 for Glossop and Hadfield, SK22 and SK23 for New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith, and SK17 for Buxton. Bakewell is the exception on DE45. The A6 is the spine, running from New Mills through Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith to Buxton and on to Bakewell. The A57 and A628 carry Glossop and Hadfield.
